Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros - Redemption Song / Arms Aloft (Epitaph)

release date: 15 December 2003
Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros - Redemption Song/Arms Aloft

Unless you've never heard a busker on London's tube, or you weren't one of the zillions of people who bought Bob Marley's Legend compilation to complement your copy of UB40 Greatest Hits, then there's just a sniff of a chance you've never heard anyone perform this lil' number. Just a sniff, mind.

This one comes with added poignanacy because, to a lot of people, Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros really did sing redemption songs. Many also loved the Jamaican rebel songs that convinced Strummer he needed a white riot, a riot of his own. And for those people this will be enough.

Bonus tracks add more characteristic Strummer modes. Arms Aloft is a shouty call to solidarity, and possibly the first song ever to feature a chorus about Aberdeen; while a live take on Jackie Mittoo's Armagideon Time will attract the completists.
