Joe Strummer was just fifty when he died last December. The former lead singer of The Clash was midway through recording a fourth solo album with the Mescaleros when he passed away, but now they have now finished off what he started.
This is the lead single from the forthcoming posthumous album Streetcore. It features the same folksy, rebel mentality that marked Strummer's earlier material, though on Coma Girl he's singing about love and not protesting.
Regardless of the performance of this album, Strummer is sure to be remembered for London Calling, a record that routinely appears in the upper reaches of "Best ever..." lists, if nothing else. It must be admitted, however, that for music fans of my generation, Strummer's greatest creation was the soundtrack to cult classic movie Grosse Pointe Blank.
