It's a shame that while singers such as James Blunt and Daniel Powter clean up in the charts, bigger talents such as Ray LaMontagne, David Ford and Johnathan Rice lurk in the background, their critical acclaim unmatched by sales as yet.
Perhaps the trouble with Rice in particular is that he's pretty much unclassifiable. On his debut album Trouble Is Real he swung from senstitive acoustic numbers to driving rockers at the drop of a hat - the vast majority of songs performed quite brilliantly. So Sweet is one of his more upbeat numbers, his vocals passionate and angry, with the strumming guitars driving the song along irrestibably.
It hasn't got the extra 'X-factor' that will break it into the charts, but it's a fine example of one of the more talented songwriters to be unearthed this year.
