One of the more subtle tracks on Flynn's excellent debut album A Larum, this is a surprise single release from the highly touted singer-songwriter.
Put simply, this track is not going to burn up the charts any time soon. All commercial considerations aside, Brown Trout Blues is a deceptively simple song that gently unfolds into something magical over four minutes.
The arresting opening couplet "Time rolls the back wheels of my mind/You helped me put the brakes on cos you're kind" sets the tone for a story of being caught between staying and going, being true to oneself or changing for a loved one. The repeated refrain "I could be somewhere else/I should be someone else" anchors the protagonist's dilemma, as well as providing the song's main vocal hookline.
Strong musical support is provided by Flynn's excellent backing band the Sussex Wit, with subtle horns and strings punctuating the music's easy folk rock stroll. Ignore the jibes about Flynn attending the expensive arts school Bedales, he is a genuine talent worth investigating.
