Jonah Matranga - Not About A Girl Or A Place (Xtra Mile)
UK release date: 14 January 2007
Jonah Matranga has been kicking around with his West coast rock for coming up to 20 years. He's still going strong, with a loyal following and if you like soft indie tones and careful sing-a-long lyrics then Not About a Girl Or A Place is probably for you too.
The first line is full of intrigue and there is a promise of a fine narrative tune. "She was the worst liar I've ever seen and she couldn't even look me in the eye".He's a sweet singer-songwriter, his voice is loose and youthful but that impression sits oddly next to "sleeping with all of my friends/then it was like the scriptures come to life". What's that about? Sodom and Gomorrah? That is a little heavy for this pop fare. It's certainly not as high-brow as it might intend to be.
The song isn't about a girl or a place and that doesn't matter because you probably won't remember hearing the upbeat guitars, head-bopping, four-four drums and a sweet humming section are employed in a American teen sitcom, where it will be most comfortable.
