With dreadlocked trust-funder Newton Faulkner touting a version around his live shows and now this release from Sweden's answer to Nick Drake, the Massive Attack/Liz Fraser collaboration is receiving quite a lot of attention a decade after its release.
José González might be hoping to achieve the level of success that has eluded him since his reworking of The Knife's excellent Heartbeats gained popularity soundtracking, some would say appropriately, a load of balls on a TV ad. This is essentially the same sort of affair. González reworks the hypnotic rhythms and ethereal beauty of the trip hop original with his trademark pulsing, intricate guitar and keening vocal.
But it's difficult to work out why he has gone to the trouble. Anyone familiar with González's work could simply imagine what you think his cover of the song will be like and you will be pretty much spot on. And his pleasing if slightly nasal voice captures all of the lyrics but little of Fraser's intensity.
While in no way terrible, José González's version of Teardrop is simply pleasant and a little pointless. And having appeared on an EP and the present album, this single release stinks of someone trying to cash in on a great song.
