Joss Stone - Super Duper Love (Relentless)

release date: 10 May 2004
Joss Stone - Super Duper Love

With the words Super and Duper adding just a frisson of Missy, you would be mistaken in thinking that Joss Stone's latest chart gambit is an utterly 21st Century concoction. Nope. Super Duper Love is a Will Garner cover, in which Ms Stone's best Dorothy Moore tones endeavour to pack a lifetime of heartbreak and experience into just a few minutes of Southern-fried soul. That's Southern as in Devon.

Super Duper Love is a convincing piece of re-construction that would fool even the Hugh Scully Massive. You know it's not right, but the period detail has been so meticulously crafted that it renders resistance futile. By the finale, we are all, in fact, diggin' on her.

The utterly faithful rendition of James Brown's It's a Man's World makes me think though. What if, in some bizarre reversal, the elder statesmen of rock 'n' roll decide to emulate the young pups of today? Like say, James Brown releasing his own deluxe collection of Blue covers (with Duncan on production), or Lou Reed knocking out a concept album inspired by the works of One True Voice? Or maybe Tom Jones desperately attempting to reach "the kids" by duetting with bands like The Cardigans or the Stereophonics. Naah, it'll never 'appen...
