This young Welsh ensemble have been listening very hard indeed to the counter-culture rock of the late 60's American west coast. This is hardly an original concept and one that The Thrills have already proved can lead to deeply bland impressions of that period.

Arthur Lee's Love are invoked on A Place, the first single from their debut album Get Me On A Road. The sprinkling of Spanish horns and a vague flamenco feel suggest this is the type of thing that Lee may have discarded from Forever Changes on the grounds that his band were becoming a parody of itself. But this is far from a poor single - Joya demonstrate promising songwriting with a jaunty yet slightly ominous melody and pleasing two-way harmonies. A more contemporary comparison would be with Calexico.

The Coral led the way in creating something original and successful after taking an influence from the likes of such Californian wackos as Lee and Captain Beefheart, and here it seems we have a band setting out on the right road to emulate the Liverpudlians. After all, there are much worse artists to emulate than Lee and Beefheart. Good luck to the boyos, I say.
