Yes, another sensitive singer/songwriter, but Julie Feeney really is worthy of your attention. Her debut album, 13 Songs, was released in her native Ireland a couple of years ago and she's since gathered plaudit after plaudit for her ethereal take on folk music.
Aching is sparse, minimalist and quite beautiful. With just the eerie backing of a synth, it's left to Feeney's voice to convey all the emotion needed - and what a voice she has. Technically impressive (one note is held for 28 seconds, apparently a world record), she also manages to never sound like she's showing off.
Names such as Joanna Newsom, Bjork and Stina Nordenstam have been mentioned when discussing Feeney, but to this reviewer's ear Sinead O'Connor is the most appropriate comparison. It may not be immediate enough to guarantee any commercial success, but Aching serves notice that Julie Feeney is one of the most intriguing new artists of the year.
