Strong early word of mouth has been following Karmakops around like hungry flies over a pile of dog crap - but this lot certainly aren't crap. Quite the opposite, in fact. They were very fortunate in that their management took them on after just one gig, which also just so happened to be their first. They have supported Stereophonics and their song Ad Break was on Steve Lamacq's Radio One playlist for three weeks. They ain't half hot, mum!
What is all the fuss about then? Well, songs like Creatures and its two B-sides justify the early buzz. It's glossy pop rock for the masses bored with the superficial frivolity of X-Factor winners and the like. The three songs on this CD have a good dose of heaviness without sounding overbaked or isolated. They have some good riffs about them and a quirky-sounding commercial sensibility.
With this debut single, Karmakops are harmless - not harsh in the slightest. They're fun and exciting, not kitsch or stupidly OTT. It's definitely radio friendly and has a large, keen eye looking right at the goldmine that is the charts. Good on 'em!
