Katie Melua has sometimes been dismissed as nothing more than a puppet of Mike Batt, her producer and writer of most of her songs. So, as if to prove that she can stand on her own two feet, along comes Spider's Web, written by Melua herself and tackling the thorny issue of racism.
Sadly, despite a pleasingly melodramatic atmosphere, it comes unstuck from the opening clumsy couplet of "If a black man is racist, is it okay when it's the white man's racism that made him that way". It's a question that deep philosophical minds have puzzled over, and it's not one solved by Ms Melua, who goes on to point out that black and white keys can sit next to each other on a piano, so - hey! - why can't the human race? It's as if Paul McCartney & Stevie Wonder never happened...
It's not helped by the fact that there's no memorable tune to hide those lyrical faults either, and after about 10 listens it's still unlikely you'll remember it at all. However, there's quite a nice acoustic version of The Beatles' Cry Baby Cry on the B-side and all proceeds go to Save The Children, so fans may want to shell out for this if they really feel the need.
