Crawling Up A Hill is the third track from Katie Melua's multi-platinum selling Call Off The Search. Not as immediate as Closest Thing To Crazy, sales may suffer slightly from its lack of contemporary edge but a number one on the sinking singles chart is no substitute for consistent album sales these days, and Melua certainly has those sewn up already.
While having to suspend disbelief when the young, ultra-successful starlet sings "My life is like a slow train crawling up a hill" (as if!), this is a likeable bluesy croon that will no doubt increase Melua's already sizeable fanbase. It's not going to win any prizes for originality - this would have been a big ask even if it had been released in the fifties - but more importantly it has no pretensions of being original either.
This is purely sweet, soulful, old-school swing heavily polished for easy consumption and digestion by the record buying public. Crawling... has got more natural soul than most singles aimed at the same end of the market and although this will not convince diehard cynics to buy the album, it is relaxing and likeable... not to mention inescapably nice.
