kd lang's recent album, Hymns Of The 49th Parallel, was a tribute to her fellow Canadians, including covers by luminaries such as Leonard Cohen, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell. What? No Celine Dion?
Simple is the only non cover version on the album, co-written by lang and her bassist David Pilcher, and is a stately piano ballad with lyrics that read more like poetry than a pop song - "I worship this tenacity and the beautiful struggle we're in/love will not elude us"
It's very tasteful and beautifully sung of course, but it hasn't got that extra mysterious factor that made songs like Constant Craving such a delight. Still, a chance to listen to lang's voice is never one to turn down.
