Kevin Mark Trail - Perspective (EMI)

UK release date: 4 October 2004
Kevin Mark Trail - Perspective

Best known as the voice behind The Streets' Same Old Show and Let's Push Things Forward, Kevin Mark Trail makes his solo debut with this autobiographical pop reggae track.

Trail opts for honesty over any attempt to maintain a showbiz front, telling us about his low-paid jobs, his school days as a loner and past tendency to break into singing Boyz II Men (surely unforgiveable). Like Mike Skinner's upfront, downtrodden kitchen sink raps, Trail sings about the everyday, (TV viewing habits, favourite school subjects), but he lacks Skinner's vision and trademark humour. Perspective is lyrically shallow and at times - the line "Sunday EastEnders, Dirty Den on a bender" especially - inane.

The chorus is positive and well intentioned, and the lilting reggae trumpeting is relaxing and warming, but what Trail may perceive as gritty post-modern realism actually comes across like a child's diary entry. It's a shame, as he has a good, soulful voice, but perhaps KMT should stick to lending it to projects that have more depth and substance.
