Kid Carpet has raised many an eyebrow in his many support slots over the last few years, playing instruments such as Fisher Price toys, leaping around the stage like a toddler who's overdosed on Sunny D and playing possibly the most bizarre version of Van Halen's Jump you'll ever hear.
This is the first taster of his upcoming second album, and sadly it's not a rewrite of the closely named Tom Waits track. Instead it's a chugging electro-ballad, enlivened by all manner of odd little sounds and the Kid's idiosyncratic voice - think Jamie T with a slight Bristol burr.
It's catchy enough, but lacks a certain something - that sparkle and charisma that's so obvious on stage seems to be a bit lacking in the studio sadly. Kid Carpet will probably divide most people, but there's enough ramshackle charm here to warrant further listening.
