Kidda - The Shoe Cash EP (Catskills)
release date: 19 July 2004
Kidda - The Shoe Cash EP

Kidda is described on his record label's website as a "cool guy who makes animated videos when he's not knocking out seminal soul breaks", and this EP release confirms him as someone to appeal to fans of Mr Scruff and the like.

Real Good Thing kicks off, an instantly likeable chorus hook punctuated by a couple of loops spliced 'n' diced over an easy but chunky hip-hop beat. Second track All I Can Be revisits the helium-like vocal over a breezy backing, while Fire 'n' Steam takes a fragmented bass and big band horns, sometimes relatively static and other times moving forward apace. Finally Hey Y'all risks a flute hook and an old time vocal to good effect.

Kidda, real name Ste McGregor, deserves credit for an enjoyable and subtly imaginative pack of tunes that will frequently bring a smile to the face.
