The Killers - Somebody Told Me (Lizard King Records)

release date: 15 March 2004
The Killers - Somebody Told Me

Don't ask me why, but I don't expect a good band to come out of Las Vegas. But The Killers have been garnering rave reviews live and their new single Somebody Told Me is going to add a lot more fans. It's good old fashioned rock with a musically sophisticated edge, and it certainly does it for me.

From the crashing guitar opening, electronica burbling and beeping in the background, you're hooked. Frontman Brandon Flowers (oh, really?) has a great voice and keeps up the relentless pace with a cheery tale of night club woes. Great lyrics, too - as in the insanely catchy chorus "Somebody told me / you had a boyfriend / who looked like a girlfriend / that I had in February of last year..."

More interesting than The Strokes, more fun than The White Stripes - this should rise effortlessly up the charts, and for once not just because it's getting a lot of hype. Debut album Hot Fuss is due out in a couple of months and on this showing should be one of the highlights of the year.
