Hailing from Oxford, King Furnace release their first single on the tiny local label Akuaba Records. The band themselves have garnered something of a reputation as an exciting live prospect. On record though, it just doesn't seem to translate.
There are plenty of nice ideas - there's the spiky new wave intro that gives way to staccato Chili Peppers accenting, or the wonderfully bellowed chorus of "CRASH!" that follows on from a verse that sounds (although probably unintentionally) a little like Devo. Along the way though, these elements combine to create something that might have been discovered in the dim distant past of Reef's b-sides. Gutted.
Blemish continues down the unhealthy route of Reef obsession although the Spanish surf guitar intro initially fools you into thinking that something interesting might be about to follow. Still it does go some way to proving that vocalist Senator Jefferson (I'm wagering that's not his real name) has a decent growl to his voice when he wants to. Closing track Making Of Me is a far more chaotic affair, darting from acoustic to full on metal guitar in the blink of an eye. The production lets it down a little, as the guitars, which should sound like jet turbines sound closer to an angry wasp stuck in a jar. Which kind of sums up King Furnace really - there's plenty of potential to sting, but for the moment they seem to be trapped by their influences and shoddy production.
