It was always going to be tough following up Sex on Fire, a song so full of testosterone that it bypassed entertainment altogether and simply pinned the listener down and humped them into oblivion. Use Somebody is no less epic in scale, but plays neatly into the hands of the critics currently bandying about words like 'sell-out'.
Lacking the killer chorus of its predecessor, Use Somebody leaves us to focus on the all-new Kings of Leon sound. This the Followills have inherited from U2 on the Coldplay side of the family, and is characterised by huge stadium-straddling shimmery guitars with the odd moody interlude. The noisy bits are best accompanied by a jumbo jet roaring overhead and tousling the hair on our boys' heads as they jab their guitars several degrees north of the angle of dangle.
Looks like I'm directing my own video here. The actual video features long shots of American cities, our handsome heroes playing in a big stadium, soundchecking before the gig, larking around in the dressing room, etc. This tells you all you need to know about the song. World domination beckons; though without the growly threat of being roughly abused by each of the brothers in turn, it's all a bit hollow really.
