Sometimes the hype machine gets things right. It clanks away, spits out a sheet of paper with a new scene name on it (in this case the inventively titled 'New Rave'), quickly followed by a list of bands that sound a bit similar. Within a couple of weeks, we've forgotten what the fuss was all about, and what any of the bands were called. This isn't the case this time around. On the strength of this single, Klaxons should be with us for some time to come.
Magick mixes up the kind of dance stomp that forces people to down handfuls of drugs and dance continuously for about four days with a sizeable chunk of indie rock. If the thundering thump of the bass drum doesn't get you, the rampant outbreak of crusty carnival rhythms definitely will. If that still doesn't set the pulse racing there's even a chilled out chorus that sounds like very early Cardiacs. It's a shame that we've had to wait until winter for a song that would have walked over the line in the race for tune of the summer. That shouldn't be a problem though, because b-side Hall of Records gives us an idea there's plenty of floor fillers in the bank.
What you've got here is a band that transcends genre, by simply writing storming songs. When New Rave is sneered at as "a load of old bollocks" Klaxons will still be here, getting people on their feet and off their tits.
