What is it with Scottish bands and guitars? Like one of the country's most established acts, Mogwai, six-piece Kobai feel the need for multiple axe-welders - four to be precise. The results are explosive and underline the potential that saw the group win last year's Emergenza Battle of the Bands at the Carling Academy in Glasgow.

The newcomers are clearly a group of lads with a fantastic attitude - their official website reveals they "enjoy nothing more than hunting for a good piss-up on tour", while openly encouraging people to bring their own DIY percussion with them to join the band on stage.

And if their debut single is anything to go by you might want to gather your pots and pans. A killer mix of all-out rock with lashings of electronica, Kobai sound like Hawkwind might have sounded had they emerged on the scene 30 years later but used no less of the acid.
