Four years since the disappointing introspection of second album Kokopelli, the Bristol trio return with their first single from new album Damage, and if this is anything to go by they've gone back to the pulsating bass-driven hook-laden songs of first album Resist.

Sian Evans still sounds like a superhero mutation of Róisin Murphy, with the power in that voice leaving the listener in awe but also a bit terrified. Combined with a heavy electronic backing and a strong chorus, Overkill would have sat comfortably on their debut next to the likes of Hide U and Catch.

Bonus track Freaks Of Nature, which won't be on the album, will also be appreciated by fans of the melodic electronic pop of Resist.

Kosheen never fitted into any convenient categories within the music scene, and it's not clear from this single whether they're moving forwards or regressing back to what seemed to work the best. It'll be interesting to see how the full album sounds, and whether the niche they carved out for themselves is still relevant.
