2009 is already shaping up to the year of quirky, female-fronted electro-pop. There's Little Boots, Micachu and now the woman who could well eclipse them all, Elly Jackson from Brixton, aka La Roux.
She's already got the right names behind her - managed by the Klaxons' management team, discovered by Seb Chew (the former Mr Lily Allen) - she's got the image and most importantly she's got some impressive songs. Quicksand is instantly addictive and catchy, and already sounds like a hit in waiting. There's a nicely sinister edge to it as well - imagine The Knife covering Prince's When Doves Cry, if you can.
And unlike a lot of electro acts out there, Quicksand has real heart and emotion to it as well - certainly not a case of style over substance. She is pretty stylish though, and could even could be single-handedly responsible for bringing back the Flock Of Seagulls haircut next year. But maybe that's not such a great thing...
