Women. There just aren't enough of them. In rock and metal, I mean. Although thankfully that is changing with the über-selling likes of Evanescence, Within Temptation and Nightwish.
Lacuna Coil, fronted by the photogenic Cristina Scabbia, are the next in line to make the step up from cult status, and if this - the lead single from their forthcoming fifth album Karmacode - is anything to go by, then these Italians are determined to make their appeal as catholic as possible.
In truth, Our Truth is solid rather than spectacular, with compressed but sharp-sounding guitars underpinning Ms Scabbia's Middle Eastern-nuanced vocals and a melody that is accessible, fairly memorable but not quite as consciousness-burrowing as it might be. Still, they're clever this lot, for somehow Our Truth leaves you wanting to hear more. "Lacuna Coil" may mean "empty spiral" but methinks their career trajectory is pointing in only one direction right now.
