Lady Sovereign - Chi Ching (Cheque One Two) (Casual)
release date: 7 June 2004
The 18-year old self-styled "ragga midget" ain't got fifty rings, but she's got fifty things to say. In a cheeky kind of way. And she's not shy about telling us, either.
And now that she's been signed up by the same label that brought us the Country Got Soul compilation, she may have to say the other 49 'fings to a wider audience. Having already got right pally with the likes of Mike Skinner and Wiley, Lady Sovereign just may be on her way to big things, and the updated Chi Ching just could be the launch pad to Dizee-er heights.
Chi Ching bumps along on a backing track that's a little bit Toytown Dancehall, a little bit Grange Hill Garage, and peculiarly, a little bit Numan. It just may a bit too UK Urban and underground for the Radio 1 playlist though hooks there are aplenty. But beware, repeated play may just do yer 'ed in.
