Lenny Kravitz - Where Are We Runnin' (EMI)

release date: 3 May 2004
Lenny Kravitz - Where Are We Runnin'?

Lenny Kravitz has had a varied career - despite a few big mainstream hits, consistent success has so far eluded him and his mix of soul and rock has received less than kind words from music journalists.

On the cover sleeve of the first single from his forthcoming album Baptism, Kravitz looks more like a dodgy pimp from a '70s blaxploitation film than a funky New York guitarist. In fact, this is a wider issue - he purports to be a sex god, he dresses like a '70s soul star, he moves his muscles like James Brown with a guitar, but I could guarantee that most people can name more of his ex-girlfriends than any of his songs.

Thankfully, Where Are We Runnin' is actually rather effective. A steady drum beat eases us into a groovy soft rock tune. There is no great riff here, but it's a fun, catchy and, with a running time of less than three minutes, a short song. Credit is due to him - this is his best single in years.
