Two years on from Leona Lewis' victory in The X Factor, and to be fair to Simon Cowell, his prediction about her becoming one of the biggest female stars on the planet seems to be coming true.
For her Christmas single, released to coincide with the 'deluxe' version of her album Spirit (basically, the old album with a couple of extra tracks and a DVD - and you wonder why Cowell's such a rich man?), she's covered the Snow Patrol staple, complete with huge, overblown string section and a choir to boot.
As ever, Lewis' voice is brilliant - she wrings every drop of emotion from Gary Lightbody's lyrics - but the overall feeling is that it's a bit too much. It starts off well enough, with soft piano, but by the time it reaches the climax, you feel a bit emotionally battered by the whole thing.
She is an extraordinary singer though, it has to be said, and if she was to follow Will Young's route and break free from the chains of Syco, she could have a really interesting career. For a mainstream pop singer though, she really is pretty damn good.
