Les Incompetents - How It All Went Wrong (White Heat)
UK release date: 20 March 2006
South London sextet Les Incompetents are yet another group who fall into the scene many are labelling as 'Thamesbeat' - which, from an outsiders perspective, appears to be a bustling community of mud hut inhabiting, fully self sufficient musicians who thrive off the fertile soil close to the water.
Well, not quite, but if the recent spurge of young, talented bands and artists to emerge from 'saaf of the river is anything to go by - Mystery Jets, Larrikin Love, Good Shoes, Jamie T - there may be some truth in all of this. And with this second single, Les Incompetents certainly display an off-the-wall, mainstream shunning quirkiness to justify their inclusion in any such list.
How It All Went Wrong lasts for just under three minutes, and in that time, manages to totally captivate the listener. Opening with a riff more akin to the East London, Pete 'n' Carl worshipping league than anything particularly skewed, it thankfully develops into an outrageously entertaining, tempo-shifting, hook filled stomp, led by two battling vocalists (one who sounds like an enthusiastic Tory peer on speed), some succinct guitar riffs and spontaneous chanting. These are exciting times indeed.
