New York-newcomers Levy are creating waves this side of the Atlantic, with their debut single Rotten Love being lauded on new music slots on alternative music radio stations like XFM, and with a short series of gigs in London before their album is released in early October.
It's easy to hear why - even after a first listen, Rotten Love's catchy tune imprints itself on to the memory, while lyrics pop back into the brain at regular intervals afterwards. The guitars and strings provide a summery, radio-friendly sound, so much so that on first blush I thought that House Of Love must have reformed.
Meanwhile, over the top of the guitars are mournfully sung yet amusingly matter-of-fact lyrics such as: "Tonight is the party, would you like to come? She says, 'No, I can’t James'." The simple but evocative chorus then states: "And he smelled of rotten love / She smelled of rotten love", telling you all you need to know in this story of love, loss and betrayal. In short, Levy are definitely ones to watch.
