Liam Finn received heaps of praise for his debut album I'll Be Lightning last year, even amongst indie cynics who routinely cock a snook at Crowded House. Here he returns with a second single from the album to coincide with a new UK tour.
The only trouble with Better To Be, which opened the CD version of I'll Be Lightning, is that it sounds more like an album track than a genuine single. Finn, who plays all the instruments, hits a ramshackle groove from the outset and doesn't let up until the song curiously moves into a downbeat final verse in a completely different tempo. The lyrics complement the offbeat music, with the paranoid subject of the song running from responsibility because 'the boy inside can't unwind'.
Hardly Radio 2 fare but anyone wishing to investigate further should check out Finn on tour. His songs step up several gears in live performances.
