At the time of writing, the future for The Libertines looks pretty bleak. Estranged lead singer Pete Doherty is awaiting sentence after admitting to both the burglary of bandmate Carl Barat's home and of a serious crack and heroin habit.

All of which makes the fact that this is the finest Libertines single yet ever more poignant. Bernard Butler is on production duties and his guitar influence is written all over this. Like Morrissey fronting The Clash, this manages to be both seriously catchy and satisfyingly raw.

It would be a crying shame if The Libertines were no more, but if that is the case then they couldn't have asked for a better swansong. Remember them this way.
