Lionel Richie - Just For You (Mercury)
release date: 8 March 2004
Lionel Richie - Just For You

Lionel Richie has been releasing singles for 25 years and has sold 100 million albums worldwide. This is, of course, not to everyone's pleasure and indeed many detested the ubiquitous Three Time A Lady when it hit number one for five long weeks in 1979. However, a fondness has developed and songs such as All Night Long and Endless Love are undoubtedly classic examples of fine songwriting.

Richies' new single Just For You, however, can never hope to join the ranks of the classic. Melodically this is slick cheese by numbers, and lyrically is unwaveringly predictable and insipid.

The man can still undoubtedly sing, but unfortunately - as a much publicised colossus of a divorce ensues for Richie - things don't look set to improve with the release of this single either. Shame.
