Lisa Brown is not, as you might expect, one singular female artist, but four blokes from Manchester. Transgender name aside, Lisa Brown are perhaps one of the most exciting bands to emerge in Manchester recently, and are signed to the fantastic High Voltage label, which has grown out of the wildly successful club night of the same name.
Lisa Brown have an inconsistent, genre-magpie style that is evident on this double A-side. What's That Sound alternates between a strange kind of indie-rap reminiscent of Buck 65 and a catchy sing-along chorus, whereas Anna's downbeat lyrics and upbeat tune recall Ed Harcourt. It's all very disparate but none of it's bad at all, and the quality musicianship in the band is clear the whole way through
This double A-side is worth buying simply for its B-side though, an achingly touching acoustic rendition of Lisa Brown's best song, the Sigur Ròs-esque Snowfight in the city centre. Unpredictable and enigmatic, Lisa Brown are definitely one to look out for in 2006.
