The expected influx of Sheffield bands to hit the charts since the Arctic Monkeys breakthrough hasn't quite happened yet. Groups such as Milburn, Gledhill and Harrisons remain only well known in their home city, while the much vaunted Long Blondes have only just got round to signing a record contract. So, can Little Man Tate become the first post-Arctic South Yorkshire band to break big?
They've been building up a fierce live reputation over the last few months which translates itself well onto What? What You Got. There's a lascivious quality to lead singer Jon Windle's vocals, as he tells the tale of a goodtime girl desperate for the weekend to arrive so she can go out on the pull. A definite late Britpop air hangs over the song, but that never did the Kaiser Chiefs any harm did it?
It's fun, catchy and rather good, but the feeling remains that this is just a bit too run of the mill to be the single that launches the Sheffield foursome into the bigtime. The good news is that those who are familiar with the demos on their My Space page know that a lot better is to come from Little Man Tate, so it only looks to be a matter of time before they give the good folk of Sheffield another band to be proud of.
