Living Things - I Owe (Dreamworks)
release date: 19 April 2004
Living Things - I Owe

Living Things are three brothers from St Louis, USA who have managed to recruit the mighty Steve Albini (The Pixies, Nirvana) to produce their latest batch of recordings.

On first hearing, there really are only two words to sum up this record: Iggy Pop. I Owe is three minutes of solid dirty guitar riffage, a stomping beat not unlike Lust For Life and a clipped half-spoken vocal very much in the style of the six-packed godfather of punk.

Original it may not be, but on further listens it becomes increasingly apparent that I Owe is really rather good. There's a semi-political protest lyric not dissimilar to the Manic Street Preachers ("I got a message from the president / he said disobey the constitution and you owe") and it's easy to imagine the song inducing plenty of moshing at their gigs. Time will tell if Living Things can carve out a sound of their own but if all else fails, they'd make a splendid Stooges tribute act.
