When is a remix not a remix? When it renames itself Ride On Time and eats the singles charts alive. You may think you have never heard this song - well you may have never heard the whole of Loleatta Holloway's disco classic Love Sensation but you would have heard the 'ride on time' vocal hook because Black Box built their massive UK number one from 1989 around samples from the original Love Sensation. They bussed in model Catherine Quinol to mime along to the samples and, hey presto, the biggest selling UK single of 1989
So here comes that heavenly vocal again this time remixed by those Hi_Tack boys. Following on from their work in Klubbheads, Dutch duo Koen Groeneveld and Addy van der Zwan have lately been troubling the upper reaches of the single charts. Say Say Say (Waiting For U) crash landed in the Top 5 early this year and their remix of Beatfreekz' Somebody's Watching Me currently sits at number two in the charts.
If you have heard those tracks then you will have an idea of what they have produced here. Tight booming house styled drums, dirty retro base and buzzing pads update this disco classic for the 21st clubbers. The problem is that Ride on Time was so tense, so perfectly formed, a stone cold classic track that this just pales in comparison. Yes, it pulls out all the stops but it still sounds slack and small, rather limited and one dimensional. If you don't own the original track get the CD as it's tucked away on track five in all its '70s pomp. Otherwise your money would be better spent downloading Ride On Time.
