When people describe Loney Dear (actually Swedish multi-instrumentalist and singer Emil Svanangen, who records in his parents' basement) as lo-fi it doesn't really prepare you.
His signature sound is rather thin and here starts off like he's been recording at the other end of the room - a large and echoing room - to his sound source.
I Am John is a sweet, rapid yet hesitant song with hurried vocals and overlapping verse and chorus form. It begins quite tentatively but builds in urgency, going from a tinklely instrumental break into a homemade crescendo of multi-layering as lovelorn Emil repeats "they're gonna let you down".
