The Long Blondes - Giddy Stratospheres (Rough Trade)
UK release date: 5 February 2007
With so many bands sounding the same these days, it's a definite breath of fresh air to come across a band like The Long Blondes. Their album Someone to Drive You Home was one of the forgotten gems of last year, it spawned a fair number of infectious singles and succeeded in highlighting the exuberant songwriting talents of Dorian Cox and Kate Jackson.
Treading the line between pop greatness and the angular guitars of New Wave, Giddy Stratospheres succeeds in worming it's way into your brain with sparkling effect. It's as if Blondie never got old.
The tune may well flash with spiky brilliance, but scratch away at the veneer and there is a tale of a relationship going nowhere, and going nowhere quick. "Why waste your time just sitting there listening to that dead-eyed bitch? She'll never take you to giddy stratospheres" sings Kate Jackson in a way that makes you wish she was the agony aunt on This Morning.
If you're currently grappling with affairs of the heart, this single is heartily recommended; the dissolution of a relationship never sounded so appealing.
