A month ahead of their September single A Tried and Tested Method,
Manchester-based northern gloom-mongers Longcut continue to champion the EP
format with four downloadable tracks available for the bargain price of
£1.50.
Following on from previous four-track offerings Transition and A Quiet
Life, The Airtight Sessions EP takes its name from the Manchester studio
where it was produced by Giles Hatton of the Earlies and includes one
exclusive song (Idiot Check) plus three from their debut album A Call and
Response, recorded in six weeks with Massive Attack producer Johnny Dollar.
Devoted fans might rankle at having to repurchase three tracks for the
sake of one new offering, but for the more casual listener the package
offers the perfect opportunity to explore the band's oeuvre which, if you
weren't already aware, consists of radio-baiting over-long industrial
bass-scapes and electronic clashes of the kind beloved by anyone who's yet
to forgive Bernard Sumner for throwing away the future of Joy
Division in a disco beat. Doomladen and searing, it's a good
introduction to their wares.
