Longview - Stripped (14th Floor)
release date: 10 May 2004
Longview - Stripped

Longview are taking a real gamble with their cover single Stripped. The Manchester indie band have actually stripped the haunting Depeche Mode track of the black industrial synth and Dave Gahan's dark vocals and replaced them with echoey glimmering guitars and Rob McVey's lighter, sadder voice.

But it works. Self-producing the track, the plaintive foursome have given the song a brooding gracefulness redolent of fellow Mancs Elbow and Doves. McVey sings the powerful lyrics, such as "let me see you make decisions, without your television", with as much gravitas as Gahan does, almost sounding like him.

Covering songs is always tough as it invites close scrutiny with the original. But Longview have reversioned Stripped to suit their own guitar-driven style and have done it well, without losing the essence of the song.
