Thus far, Longwave have achieved that rare feat of being lauded by both the inkie press and the rock mags. This single, the second to be lifted from their debut album, The Strangest Things, coolly demonstrates why.
Day Sleeper is a beguiling, instrumental track that takes a laid-back drum beat and progressively augments it with other musical layers. There are periods of Mellotron-like guitar noise but, all in all, the vibe is as settled as the title suggests.
Instrumentals from rock bands are not exactly renowned for their hit single status, at least not this side of Fleetwood Mac's Albatross. Day Sleeper may not be in that class but it certainly proves that Longwave are flying in the right direction.
