If you missed the Eurovision Song Contest this year (and if you did, who can really blame you) then it may surprise you to learn that the winners this year were not your run of the mill youngsters who seem to be the epitome of clean living. Nope, instead this rock behemoth (in the context of Eurovision at least) swept the board. Hard Rock Hallelujah is no piddly little pop tune, there are no whiter than white smiles, and no sign of any hands across the divide pleas for world peace: here stands a massive rubbery ogre of stadium rock.

As a song, Hard Rock Hallelujah is nothing new in the world of ordinary music, in fact it is a fairly poor imitation of the kind of thing that Kiss and Motley Crue used to knock out in the mid '80s. But in the world of Eurovision, an all out rock song delivered by a group of hairy men in monster outfits was initially greeted with the kind of disdain you might receive for taking a dump in the Pope's big hat.

The ridiculous pomp of the song evidently won a few people around though, because Lordi won by miles, with the highest score ever. Next year's contest should be packed with Gwar-a-likes, guitar solos, and people dumping in the Pope's big hat. Can't wait to hear Wogan's comments on that.
