Lucky Jim - You're Lovely To Me (Skint)

release date: 5 July 2004
Lucky Jim - You're Lovely To Me

Lucky Jim have enjoyed constant critical acclaim without having penetrated the mainstream market at all. The latest single from their capable debut album, Our Troubles End Tonight, looks set to continue the trend - a story of love and longing that tugs ever-so-gently on the heartstrings; it deserves a far wider audience than it will probably ever receive.

It is a little surprising that a band made up entirely from British stock manage to sound so American. James Taylor is there, and so is Neil Young. But the whisky and cigarettes, caramel-over-sandpaper vocals mark it out as particularly reminiscent of Bob Dylan, but even more so, his son's band The Wallflowers.

Metaphor and simile laden, the song is poetic, but somehow doesn't cross the line into being hackneyed and cheesy. An acoustic guitar strums lazily in the foreground and a string orchestra provides a backdrop for what becomes an instrumentally lush and deeply layered tune that is a joy to the ears. There are two additional tracks on the single too, both of which complement You're Lovely To Me, but are nowhere near its' equal.
