Brighton, and in particular, Skint Records, are best known for the big beat party anthems of Fatboy Slim and general celebratory atmosphere. Lucky Jim however show off a whole new side to the Hove record label, being a downbeat acoustic duo.
Lesbia is, quite frankly, magnificent. A swooping epic with Gordon Grahame's vocals being particularly affecting here - he has the sort of voice that can conjure up a whole welter of emotions, and the song's string section and poetic lyrics ("Now the only thing as pretty as snow in New York City was seeing you arriving on the scene") will have all right thinking people wiping away a tear.
It's backed with a version of Leonard Cohen's Hallejulah (which has been covered to death in all honesty, but it's still a wonderful song) and a superb new track, Somewhere Up Ahead which is taken from next year's forthcoming album. All very reminiscent of those other acoustic marvels, I Am Kloot, this is the discerning record buyer's Christmas single of choice.
