You'd imagine that Luke Toms, with his flowing blonde locks, shirt and braces combination and quite ridiculous moustache, would probably describe himself as a 'dandy'. He's not of course, he just looks very silly, but at least it does draw some attention away from his music.
Ever since The Feeling managed to con a large percentage of the population into believing that Supertramp were somehow cool, we've had an endless procession of retro '70s soft rockers for our amusement. Already this year we've had 'love him or hate him' (or feel crushingly indifferent) Mika, and now along comes Luke Toms. Peace By Myself is an appallingly overblown ballad, bringing to mind the worst excesses of Queen, only with Toms' caterwauling over it, instead of Freddie Mercury's genuine star quality.
The B-side Crazy is, if anything, even worse, with a horribly jaunty piano solo and 'oompha-oompha' brass section making the listener want to go out and form their own punk group to rid the world of this bilge once and for all. "Why are you here?" wonders Toms on Peace By Myself - why indeed?
