Clearly Luke Toms likes dressing up, even if he does look a bit of a knob in an Edwardian vision of a King Arthur costume on his press releases. But how many other singer songwriters do you know who have their own crest and motto: "Philanthropist, Dandy, Songwriter."
I have a sneaking admiration for such flamboyance, and, unlike Russell Brand, at least he looks like bathes every day. However with regard to his motto, Songwriter is correctly placed third in his list of attributes.
The Fools With Money EP sets out to show you as much of Toms' 'talent' as possible. Fools With Money itself is clearly influenced by ELO, with waterfalls of strings, and their trademark 'bom-bom-bom' distinction between notes, layered harmonies and every effect you can get in there.
There's a pantomime Englishness about it all (he's been touring with The Feeling and they should be very cosy together). Hangover Blues shifts the focus to Queen, and Toms' cod English stylings suddenly change to Freddie Mercury impersonation. By You Can't Do That (ELO again) I was already getting tired of all the play acting. It's great to have people like Toms in the world. I'm sure he would be fascinating to talk to, but I'd rather not have to listen to his derivative music.
