Always a risk, taking a well known sample such as this and adding
further vocals. In fact it must be one of the few incidences where a record
is a sample of a sample. Lupe Fiasco's track is based on the I Monster hit
from 1999, Daydream In Blue, which in turn takes elements of the
composition Daydream from the Gunter Kallman Choir. Confused?!
It's a bit too much to be honest. The memorable accompanying melody is
of course a sublime one that has seen a lot of TV advert action, but it's
doubtful that Jill Scott's wonderful voice is put to best use here,
doing little more than adding the odd ornamentation while the sample
crackles in the background.
Then the rap kicks in and it's game over, with the many instrumental
layers now completely swamped by some mostly inconsequential verse. You
won't be falling asleep amid the flowers to this one - this is more like a
heavy landing in a gorse bush.
