This is the second single to come from Martin Craft's debut album Silver & Fire, and if there's any justice, Sweets will guide a few more people towards M. Craft's undeniable talent.
If you've ever been stranded in a large city at 5am in the rain with nowhere to stay and no way to get home, sometimes those darkened doorways and grimy clubs look like a reasonable proposition. Sweets then, is a seedy and dark acoustic trawl through the nightlife of the city. Similar in tone to dEUS' Sister Dew, it's a gentle tune, with a surprisingly unpleasant underbelly. For those of you too young to remember the likes of Charley the Cat and public information broadcasts, it serves as a warning not to accept sweets from strangers: an important lesson for everyone there then. More importantly it showcases M. Craft's canny songwriting skills, and disarmingly charming vocal style.
B-side She Sells Sanctuary takes The Cult's classic tune and gives it a sprightly reworking. Replete with handclaps and a cutesy backing vocal it almost sounds as if this version were written at the end of the 60's and The Cult subsequently covered it. It's not often covers are little more than filler or throwaway tunes recorded in spare studio time, but this is a genuinely worthy version.
