After an essentially well received debut album that explored the kind of
melancholic pop we've come to know and love from Bergen, Magnet (Even
Johansen) has taken a turn for a more upbeat pop style.
You wouldn't think so from reading some of the lyrics cold, though - the
second verse ponders that; "you spend days just waiting for your next
defeat," but it does boast the uplifting chorus of; "you'll get through this
if you hang on, the truth is you're not alone," then substituting the "you"
for "I" second time around. This is canny, as it makes for double the
appeal - it could be for you, or your nearest and dearest.
Hold On is therefore something of a torch song, dressed as it is with
excellent orchestration and a soft, trippy beat in the manner of
Air. An excellent single, and a song that bodes well for the very
imminent second album.
