Beautiful Ruin is the second single from Brighton-based Make Good Your Escape who already boast a sound that seems tightly honed and well-crafted, falling equidistant between indie and metal. Both debut single No Return and its follow-up Beautiful Ruin make a noise of substantial proportion and feature epic melodies.
The vocal work is highly reminiscent of Terry Abbott of the now defunct Vex Red, but it is in the melodies where Beautiful Ruin excels. Both in the vocals and the guitars the melodies are hard-hitting and memorable. These are accompanied by punchy, dance influenced drum patterns and fortified by large basslines. The only questionable element of Beautiful Ruin is that there isn't quite enough going on musically (there is little dynamicism, for instance) and it is hard to imagine the song enjoying any real longevity.
B-side Far Away juxtaposes the frenzied ferocity of Beautiful Ruin, relaxed and delicate with a fragility in the vocals, but still those intricately woven melodies. It's rumoured Make Good Your Escape will release their debut LP later this year - let's hope so.
